Impressions from GDBC 2019

You Built It, and You Did Not Run Away from It

On June 15th, 2019 our brave teams eager to learn rugged DevOps joined the Global DevOps Bootcamp (GDBC) and added Split among 89 locations around the world where this global free one-day event for more than 10.000 passionate DevOps community members took place. The event was hosted by PICS@FESB.

The global keynote was hosted by Niall Murphy, Director of Engineering for Azure Cloud Services and Site Reliability Engineering for Microsoft, who explained what Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) is and how its practices work in conjunction with DevOps. Check out this video!

We continued with the local keynote explaining the 3 important phases of the run part of DevOps:

  • Detect. Get insights into how your system behaves to make you and your users aware of any anomalies.
  • Respond. Connect with your users to make sure users are aware of the issue.
  • Recover. Take remediation actions to get your system back into operation.

Our attendees worked together to keep their instance of the provisioned webshop in Azure together with all its resources up and running while it was exposed to the following 8 different production-like disruptions of different severities:

They could first detect the disruption, then respond with a quick fix to get their webshop up and running again. Then they had time to figure out a permanent solution to automatically recover or prevent the disruption from happening in the first place.

You can check out all the challenges at and check out the after movie.

We would like to thank our teams for their participation and giving their best to not only gain new knowledge but to score well on the global scale!
